Jam-packed week already

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 6:12 PM

The last couple of days have been filled to the brim with errand-running and stuff-doing, including (but not limited to) - grocery shopping, post-office visiting, bank dropping-by, University Book Store stock (and mail order) signing, print framing, house cleaning, laundry washing, official correspondence exchanging, outline jotting, fish tank changing, and event preparations.

That last one may have you wondering … what event?
Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten already!
Here, let me refresh your memory.

This coming Thursday, at 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea on Capitol Hill,* I’ll be hanging about and signing books and basically having a marvelous time at a most excellent party being thrown by some of my awesome friends. No, seriously. Ellen, Suezie, and Psynde — these three have knocked it out of the park … and into the local establishment where there will be music, costumes, prizes, booze, caffeine, and snacks for the ordering. You can click here for details or heck, just show up some time after six o’clock and join the fray.

Bring your books and I’ll sign them if you like, or buy them at the event. Or forget the books, and just swing by to be social. I’m always happy to meet new people, and Mark Henry will be MC’ing the event. If you’ve never heard Mark MC anything, then you must absolutely not pass up this opportunity. If you have, then I’m already confident that you’ll be in attendance, unwilling to miss it.

This will be an all-ages event, since (a). it’s open to the public, and (b). Boneshaker is a bit of an adult/young adult crossover. Or so I am told. In any event, lots of young adults seem to be reading it, either by swiping it from their parents or nabbing it from a friend. Let me be the first to say I APPROVE OF THIS BEHAVIOR. Please do carry on.

Anyway. It’s coming up on suppertime here and the husband just got home from work, so I’m going to wrap this up and go get myself some noms. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope I’ll see some of you locals later on this week!

* Yes, I am aware that this is really a Starbucks in disguise. We tried first and foremost to run with an independent shop for this event, but we got nothing but hassle and run-around; and then the 15th Ave people stepped in. The store has been exceedingly supportive and helpful, and I’m grateful for the venue.

Bento # 655

It is all the bikes' fault. I'd all but forgotten I'd bought those bike-shaped pasta but when I saw them in my bag of "funny pasta" I keep around, I got the idea to the traffic light scenario. And since it's far too seldom I have a reason to use my hiragana-cutters, I leapt to the possibility here and wrote とまれ (STOP!)

The horribly overexposed blob in the corner is a Cinnamoroll-shaped egg btw. I hate photographing eggs...

croak croak croak

Definitely still sick, :( I woke up feeling like crap, called a classmate (it's studio today from 10-4, much of which is groupwork), said that I wouldn't be there in the morning. Apparently no one showed up to class and the prof started ranting and raving about how people who didn't show up were going to burn in hell. Or, technically that he'd never give them recommendations and bla bla bla. IDK, I wasn't there. She said there was lots to do, so I shuffled over to school, said hi to the group, and waited in line to talk to the prof.

He was like, "LOL WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE YOU'RE SICK."

I was like, ... :/

He was all, "why are you here trying to infect me, go to a doctor, go to bed, do not hang around."

I didn't want to go to the doctor because that's how you get swine flu as far as I can tell, but whatever, I stopped by the clinic on my way home and made an appointment for tomorrow. Then I'll REALLY be sick, >:( BUT ANYWAY. I got an extension for the essay due Friday so it would be good to have a doctor's note.

I've lost my voice, almost entirely. I mean, the great thing about how I get sick is that I get sick and I'm like BLAHHHHH and everyone's like, you are sick. Because I sound really fucking sick. No one would ever think I was faking it. But the annoying part of that is that no one wants to listen to you when you're sick. I start croaking at someone and they're all, "Don't talk, don't talk." BUT CLEARLY I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, MOTHERFUCKER.

So, yeah, idk. Pros and cons.

My freakin' sinuses are killing me. I guess I am congested after all. I thought I was getting an ear infection because my ear was SO PAINFUL, so I started taking the cold medicine with the antihistamines because my mother, who does not AT ALL believe in taking cold medicine, said it might help. It was in the contexts of, "You don't need to go to the dr. for antibiotics because it'll heal just as fast on its own, but def. take something to clear out your head," but that still counts. So I started taken them and then all the sudden my nose started running like crazy. All the congestion was somewhere other than my nasal cavity, which was very confusing. My ear stopped hurting once my head began to clear, so A+ success. Now if the snot would just bypass my sinuses that would be an A++++.

Um, yeah, so anyway. What's up? How are you doing? I'm going crazy in my tiny apartment with no human contact, /o\

I felt like posting a poem today. A bit of poking around at Poets.org turned up a poet I've never read, and four of her poems. I figured I'd pick one. I couldn't. That was weird; I normally pick and choose among poems pretty easily, even by favorite poets -- simple fact of a poem either striking a chord or leaving me underwhelmed -- but I really liked all four of these. So I'm posting them all.

Four poems by Jennifer K. Sweeney:

How to Uproot a Tree )

In Flight )

Fragments for the End of the Year )

Con the Con - a Leverage Con - March 2010. i think it was Tim Hutton who first mentioend the idea on his twitter. You've got a love a show that runs its own Con! I think this would be much fun. (and much mayhem I expect).

Fall Ball - Toronto - November 13

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 6:59 PM
Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I was wondering what time people are going to go to the show  on November 13 in Toronto.

I know it starts at 6:30 and it says doors open at 6. But its my first TAI show, and I'm not really sure what to expect. I'm going by myself too. So if anyone could just give me a heads up on what time I should show up or something that would be super helpful.

Thanks.

OH MY GOD. SO HOOOOOT.

ETA:

WHOOPS. There may be some mildy spoilery plot speculation in the comments based upon the 1970's version of the movie, but it could also be totally wrong because there haven't been any actual spoilers for the remake yet.

Cleaning out my Body

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Hi. I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I am new to trying to live a more natural life. Currently I am in a transitional period where I am changing the food I put into my body. I live in a dorm and do not have a fridge. My meal plan isn't so great - not a lot of nutritious options. I don't feel well a lot of the time and I'm convinced it's because of the food I have been eating (classic dorm room food, all highly processed). I want to cleanse my body - kind of like a complete overhaul. But I have two questions about it:
1. Is a complete overhaul a good idea?
2. How can I go about doing it?
Is it as simple as cutting out all of the crap or should I go through some sort of detoxification process to get a clean start? I've been reading up on it but I thought it would be a good idea to hear from personal experiences with lifestyle changes.

Thanks for your help.

Reveals have gone up for the [info]ownficfest, so I can now take responsibility for inflicting a non-magical Parliament/cricket/coffeshop fic on fandom. \0/

A huge, huge, huge thank you to those of you on my flist who pointed me in the right direction for cricket info. I ran up against the deadline in writing this fic, so I actually snipped the plot I'd developed in half at an appropriate point, which means for the couple of you who've poked me, yes, there will be a sequel at some not-so-distant point down the road and (in response to [info]cursive's insistence that she wanted more cricket, dammit) I can say definitively that cricket will become even more of a plot point. *g*

Title: Black Coffee on a Lonely Night
Pairing: Harry/Draco, past Draco/Astoria
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: non-magical AU, bisexuality
Word Count: ~21,600
Summary: Draco owns a café in the city. Harry's a MP who comes in every morning, newspapers in one hand, BlackBerry in the other, and orders a triple espresso macchiato.
Author's Notes: Written for the 2009 [info]ownficfest. Much love to [info]cursive and [info]noeon for their support and their suggestions. Many thanks also to my flist for advice regarding cricket and to the highly informative UK Parliament website, and a huge thank you to [info]tray_la_la for the opportunity to write this.

( The day my wife dies, I'm half a world away, having my cock sucked in the filthy loo of a Brisbane pub. )

This fic is also archived on my Dreamwidth fic journal, An Archive of Our Own, and Skyehawke.

Download a PDF version of this fic.

Addendum: When I started writing this fic, I commissioned [info]glockgal for art to accompany it. She came up with the following gorgeous picture that proved to be the inspirational push I needed to finish the story. \0/

Wow I didnt think my post would produce so many coments. But im all for talking. (I dont think there is less art nor did I say that)

But since we are talking about this. What do you find different  good, bad or indifferent since 2000 in the city.

Bad many fewer small sewing stores, lots less dance studios, hardly any second hand book stores, lack of supermarkets.

Good, Lots more trees and public gardens, the green belt, fruit carts, 14 st alive again, better quality street performers, much less dog poop.

indifferent Much more fast food, Starbucks, Lots more dorm housing,  lots more tourists.

cherry eye problem

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 5:48 PM
I'm fostering Daisy, a brindle Pit. She's such a sweetheart. Anyway before she came to me from the shelter, she had a "cherry eye" in both eyes and they tucked them back in. I had for a week and had her on meds and she was fine. I woke up in the morning and her right eye has a "cherry eye" again.

I don't really want to have the gland taken out, then she may get "dry eye" and would have to have to put eye drops in all the time. Has anyone had to deal with "cherry eye" before? What did you do? What did the vet recommend?

Just want to get peoples opinions, I went to one vet and the told me to take the cherry eyes out. But I want more opinions from other vets and people who's dogs have had this and what treatment did you do before deciding and I know I need to decide soon. Thanks.

This is Daisy before her cherry eye came back:
